2007

poster-2007en-23.jpgThe Utan Kayu International Literary Biennale is a tour-de-force of literary luminaries to a number of Indonesian cities in a series of dynamic, live performances by authors followed by audience interaction. At each city visited by the biennale, international writers will present their work and have the opportunity to enjoy the work of unique Indonesian writers, showcasing the wide range of talent in Indonesia.

Growing from a poetry festival, the biennale continues to focus on readings, often in the native tongue of the writer. A wide appreciation of the work being performed is assured by translations displayed on a projection screen next to the stage.

As homage to the devastating powers of nature that have wreaked havoc at both locations of the biennale and the greater force of the human heart and mind that have shown trust, tenacity and creativity in rebuilding lost communities in face of such adversity, the theme of the Utan Kayu International Literary Biennale 2007 is Force Majeure. The theme is also a salute to the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Aceh, which due to logistics is not yet able to host the biennale as planned.
