2005
The International Literary Biennale 2005 is a continiuation and extension of previous festivals held by Komunitas Utan Kayu: the International Poetry Festival (2001) and the International Literary Festival (2003). That the virtually same project goes under three different names in three consecutive years indicates a continuity and change, that every event is a never ending process of learning. It is pleasure that an international literary festival could be held for the third time in Indonesia.
Since this year we call the festival as âInternational Literary Biennaleâ for several reasons. Firstly, the festivals have taken place every two years. Secondly, there has been an extension of literary genres involved (the first festival featured only poetry, the second added prose genre, and this year there is yet another addition: a play based on poetic works). This festival not only showcases works and writers of modern literature butâin limited portionâalso exposes the almost extinct oral tradition. Thirdly, the previous two festivals have been a worthy experience for us in strengthening our conviction and improving our ability to hold the fourth festival in 2007.
Some extra literary factors have in recent years served as barrier. One of them is the issue of terrorism. In the previous festival, some of the participant had cancelled their participation after a bomb exploded and destroyed a hotel in Jakarta. Terrorism which is sometimes allegedly connected with the Islamic world also adds to the rather unwelcoming impression: Indonesia is not a safe place to go. Such a negative view has in fact strengthened our willingness to go on to realize this yearâs festival. And, in a way, those external factors remind us that literary is never an island alone.
We aware that Indonesia was not free from international conflict. Many problems in within and outside the country have involved us in world tensions: The territorial conflict concerning the small islands around the Indonesian-Malaysian border, the memories of Timor Leste conflict, the seeming love-hate relationship between Indonesia and Australia, and also the turmoils and tragedies in Aceh and Papua now effecting relations between Indonesian anda many countries.
Through this festival, we invited writersâguardians of the inner selfânot only from neighboring countries but from faraway regions as well, so that people from different nations and cultures may share and understand each other, get better ideas and maintain harmonious relationships despite the shambles of the political world without fear and bad prejudice.
The theme, âLiving Togetherâ, is chosen to bring forth the idea that the festival is a means for grasping the essential idea of literature: an effort to understand human being and his/her place in the scheme of things. Small and faint though it may be, I hope the voice of this festival will be part of great cultural chorus which has a power to affirm the fellowship among civilized societies, since we may discern in literature the ideal of brotherhood transcending ideologies, religions and nations. This is a beautiful but hard-to-realize idea.
Hard to realize, because so many people, including the educated people and those working in cultural field, and even they who come from the so-called highly civilized countries, often do not consider literature as top priority in the nourishing relations among peoples and nations. We have invited writers from some 20 countries through diplomatic representatives and cultural centres to take a part in this festival but most of them gave rather discouraging responses. Of course we appreciate their reasons.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Prince Claus Foundation, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Komunitas Rumah Panggung, Australia-Indonesia Institute, and Stichting Winternachten. Without their support, this festival would have been impossible. Also, many thanks to the writers who have been willing to share their works, and to everyone who has provided help but whom we could mention one by one. May our good will and work be of some benefit and value.
