Lahir di Palembang, 15 Agustus. Moela menyelesaikan studi di Diploma Teknik Sipil, ATENAS, Bandung. Sebelum bergabung dengan Komunitas Utan Kayu pada 1999, ia bekerja di PT Pupuk Sriwijaya (PUSRI).
Born in Palembang, on August 15. He completed his studies at Diploma Civil Engineering at ATENAS, Bandung. Before joining Komunitas Utan Kayu in 1999, he worked at PT PUSRI.


Meity F. Bachrul

lahir di Makassar, 14 Mei 1959. Pendidikan terakhirnya S-2 Pasca Sarjana Fak. Psikologi UI kekhususan Psikologi Industri dan Organisasi. Pernah bekerja sebagai staf redaksi Majalah Femina (1984), kemudian bergabung dengan kelompok Tempo Inti Media Tbk. Pada 2002-2004 menjabat Wakil Direktur Usaha PT. Temprint – percetakan merangkap Direktur Eksekutif PT. Grafiti Medika Pers – penerbit majalah kedokteran. Sejak 2006 bergabung dengan Yayasan Utan Kayu.


Asty Leonast

Born in Jayapura, Papua, on August 7. Asty graduated from law school at Universitas Surabaya. She worked at an events organizing company and oil company prior to working at Komunitas Utan Kayu since 1996.


Wikan Satriati

Born in Magelang, June 23. Wikan graduated from Faculty of Literary at Gadjah Mada University. She translated Miramar, a novel by Naguib Mahfouz (2001) and Harry Aveling’s articles in Secrets Need Words: Indonesian Poetry 1966-1998 (2003). She has worked as editor at KataKita publisher. She wrote several children short stories which published under title Melangkah dengan Bismillah (2006).


Kadek Krishna Adidharma

Born in Bali in 1979, Kadek completed his studies in Environmental Engineering at Auckland University in 2002 and worked for three years as an Engineering consultant in New Zealand. Raised multi-lingual, Kadek is a natural translator well known for his spontaneous literary interpretation at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. His translations have been published alongside the original in bilingual editions of Against All Odds by Idanna Puci, The Art of Learning by Doing by Sarita Newson and TERRA, an anthology of writing from WordStorm, the Northern Territory Writers’ Festival. Kadek writes a weekly column for The Jakarta Post.


Asikin Hasan

Asikin studied sculpture at the Visual Arts Department of the Bandung Institute of Technology.  He worked as a reporter for the news magazine TEMPO covering West Java. His articles on visual art have appeared in a number of journals, magazines, and newspapers including “Art and Asia Pacific”, a journal of the visual arts published in Sydney, Australia.
In 1997, Asikin has the opportunity to study at a variety of museums including: The Pushkin Museum, Moscow, The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as a number of museums in Paris. In 1998, he participated in a curator workshop in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and Kyoto sponsored by The Japan Foundation.  He has edited two books, Dua Seni Rupa and Sepilihan Tulisan Sanento Yuliman. Asikin also curated the project “TRANSIT” New Media, in Townsville, Brisbane, Darwin, Australia.


M. Guntur Romli

Mohamad Guntur Romli born in Situbondo, East Java. Studied Islamic philosophy at the Al-Azhar University of Cairo, Egypt until 2004. While in Cairo he was an overseas correspondent for the Magazine Panji Masyarakat and the newsweekly GATRA. He writes on religion, Middle East politics and literature. Besides being the curator of discussions at Teater Utan Kayu, he is also the editor of the Liberal Islam Network (Jaringan Islam Liberal or JIL).


Tony Prabowo

Tony Prabowo is one of Indonesia’s most distinguished composers and a significant force in Indonesian modern music. He studied music with Slamet Abdul Sjukur at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts. Tony started the New Jakarta Ensemble in 1996.
Tony has collaborated with choreographers, painters, poets, as well as directors of film and theater. His work has been produced and enjoyed world-wide. In the United States, his collaborative work has been performed at the New York International Festival of the Arts, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Lincoln Center, and the Tanglewood Festival (with conductor Tan Dun). His work has been performed by the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Seattle Creative Orchestra, ISI Yogyakarta Orchestra, the Mannes Orchestra, the Orchestra of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen among others.
Though previous works made use of the entire orchestra, his latest works are for voice. His first opera, The King’s Witch (1999) was performed in Alice Tully Hall, New York. Meditation on Lu Xun II (2000) adalah karya koor pertamanya, telah dibawakan oleh Paduan Suara Universitas Parahyangan. Tony received the Meet the Composer grant from the Ford Foundation and the Asian Cultural Council allowing him to live in New York from 1997-1998.


Eko Endarmoko

Moko studied literature at the University of Indonesia.  His essays and critiques have been published in a variety of media including Basis, Horison, Kalam, Kompas, Sinar Harapan, Berita Buana, Berita Nasional, and Suara Karya. He has served as the editor of the magazine Optimis (1983), managing editor of Berita Buku (Ikapi Pusat, 1987-1989), and editor at the publishing house Pustaka Utama Grafiti (1989-1997). In 1996, representing Pustaka Utama Grafiti, he attended the Frankfurt International Book Festival.  He became involved with Komunitas Utan Kayu in 1997. Moko also served as the book editor for KITLV (Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal, Land- en Volkenkunde) Jakarta (1997-2003). KITLV, together with Komunitas Utan Kayu, sponsored a 3-month study in Leiden, The Netherlands (2001) where he undertook research at the University of Leiden to prepare for the creation of his Indonesian Thesaurus, a project that is expected to be completed and published in 2006.


Nirwan Dewanto

Nirwan is a founder of the Kalam Journal of Culture, serving as Senior Editor since 1994. He has worked with Teater Utan Kayu and the Lontar Gallery since 1996. Though one of Indonesia’s most influential critics, he began his career as a geologist at the Bandung Institute of Technology. His interest in literature in the arts emerged during his school years when he led the Literature Appreciation Group at ITB from 1983-1985. He worked in the field of oil and gas exploration until 1991 when he left geology for the arts.
His work as a critic includes writing on literature, visual arts, and occasionally film. He has also published his fiction in the journals Kalam and Prosa.  Nirwan has served as the.  Since 2002, Nirwan has also served as the editor of the Arts page in Koran Tempo Sunday Edition and as a member of the Lontar Foundation Editorial Board.
Among his research abroad, he received a Fulbright grant as a researcher/guest writer at the University of Wisconsin, Madison 1998-1999. His book of essays “Senjakala Kebudayaan” was published in 1996.


Goenawan Mohamad

Selepas jadi pemimpin redaksi majalah Tempo dua periode (1971-1993 dan 1998-1999), Goenawan nyaris jadi apa yang pernah ia tulis dalam esainya: transit lounger. Seorang yang berkeliling dari satu negara ke negara lain: megajar, berceramah, menulis. Seorang yang berpindah dari satu tempat penantian ke tempat penantian berikutnya, tapi akhirnya hanya punya sebuah Indonesia.
Dalam perjalanan itu lahir sejumlah karya. Bersama musisi Tony Prabowo dan Jarrad Powel ia membuat libretto untuk opera Kali (1996-2003) dan dengan Tony, The King’s Witch (1997-2000). Tapi ia juga ikut dalam seni pertunjukan dalam negeri. Dalam bahasa Indonesia dan Jawa, Goenawan juga menulis teks untuk pertunjukan wayang kulit, Wisanggeni (1995), Alap-alapan Surtikanti (2002) dan drama tari Panji Sepuh.
Sajak-sajaknya dari berbagai antologi yang terbit sebelum 2001, dibukukan secara lengkap dalam Sajak-Sajak Lengkap 1961-2001 (2001). Diseleksi kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris dan diterbitkan dengan judul Goenawan Mohamad: Selected Poems (2004).
Kumpulan esainya: Potret Seorang Penyair Muda sebagai si Malin Kundang (1972), Seks, Sastra dan Kita (1980), Kesusasteraan dan Kekuasaan (1993), Setelah Revolusi Tak Ada Lagi (2001), Eksotopi (2002).  Catatan Pinggir, esai pendeknya setiap minggu untuk majalah Tempo (kini terbit jilid ke-6 dan ke-7). Jilid 1-5 diseleksi dalam Kata Waktu (2001), dan terbit dalam terjemahan bahasa Inggris oleh Jeniffer Lindsay, dalam Sidelines (1994) dan Conversations with Difference (2002).
Setelah pembredelan Tempo (1994) ia mendirikan ISAI (Institut Studi Arus Informasi), untuk memperjuangkan kebebasan ekspresi. Secarasembunyi-sembunyi, antara lain di Jalan Utan Kayu 68H, ISAI menerbitkan serangkaian media dan buku perlawanan terhadap Orde Baru. Sebab itu di Utan Kayu 68H itu bertemu banyak elemen: aktivis pro-demokrasi, seniman dan cendekiawan yang bekerja bahu membahu dalam perlawanan itu. Dari ikatan ini lahir Teater Utan Kayu, Radio 68H, Galeri Lontar, Kedai Tempo, Jaringan Islam Liberal, dan terakhir Sekolah Jurnalisme Penyiaran, yang meskipun tidak tergabung dalam satu badan, bersama-sama disebut “Komunitas Utan Kayu”.


Veronique Rompas

Born in Duri, Riau, on May 9. Nike completed her studies at the Secretarial Academy at Tarakanita. She worked for twelve years as an executive secretary at Tempo Newsweekly Magazine, and has worked at Komunitas Utan Kayu since 2003.


Hasif Amini

Hasif involvement with TUK began in 1999 when he began working with Kalam. Previously he studied economics at the University of Indonesia but left this to follow his true calling working with language and literature. In 1992, along with several colleagues, he founded Gorong-Gorong Budaya, a discussion group that published a number of books on culture.
An accomplished translator and editor, Hasif is particularly known for his excellent translations of poetry and prose to English from Indonesian, his English being polished by one year living in New Zealand with the AFS Intercultural Learning Program. Among his work, he translated and co-edited with Margaret dan Leon Agusta the poetry anthology The Poets’ Chant (1995) that was published in connection with the Istiqlal International Poetry Reading ’95. He edited the short story collection Para Pembohong (1996). Translated selected fiction works of Jorge Luis Borges under the title Labirin Impian (1999). Presently, he works as the editor of Kalam and co-editor of Prosa, as well as developing discussions of poetry in the cultural column “Bentara” in the newspaper Kompas.


Sitok Srengenge

Sitok Srengenge was born in 1965 in Dorolegi, Central Java.  He is a highly acclaimed poet, writer, editor; he also serves as Literature and Theatre Curator at the Utan Kayu Arts Community Center in Jakarta as well as editor of the Kalam cultural journal.
Sitok has published a number of books, including his collections of poetry Wild Coupling (1992, 1994), Bastard (2000), Nonsense (2000), On Nothing, Selected Poems (2005); and his novel Seasoning a Flying Bird (2004) and a trilogy Kutil (2006).
     In 2000, Srengenge was cited by Asiaweek magazine as one of twenty ‘leaders for the Millenium in society and culture’ in Asia. In 2001, he took part in the International Writing Program in University of Iowa, USA. He is currently writing on a new novel  A Cup of Soup for Sorrow and working as a general manager at his own publishing house, KataKita.

Triyanto Triwikromo (Indonesia)

04-triyanto-web.JPG(Salatiga, 1964) His collection of short stories, Rezim Seks (1987) was reprinted along with his second collection Ragaula (2002), followed by Sayap Anjing (2003), Children Sharpening the Knives (2003), and Malam Sepasang Lampion (2004). This Best Indonesian Poet according to Gadis magazine 1989 has also published a number of poetry collections. He participates in various theatre and literature events, including Wordstorm Nothern Territory Festival 2005 in Darwin, Australia. He is currently a journalist and literary editor for the daily Suara Merdeka, Semarang.


Joko Pinurbo (Indonesia)

04-joko-pinurbo-web.jpg(Sukabumi, 1962) answered his calling to write poetry in the late 70s. His first anthology of poetry, Celana (Pants, 1999), received the Lontar Literary Prize in 2001. He was also among the Tempo Select Literary Figures 2001 (along with Ayu Utami). His anthology Di Bawah Kibaran Sarung (Under My Flapping Sarong, 2001) received the Literary Prize from the Language Centre of the National Education Department for 2002. In 2005 he received the Khatulistiwa award for his poetry anthology Kekasihku (My lover, 2004). His other collections of short stories include Pacarkecilku (2002), Telepon Gengam (2003), Pacar Senja - Seratus Puisi Pilihan (2005), and Kepada Cium (2007).


Iman Budhi Santosa (Indonesia)

04-iman-budhi-santosa-web.jpg(Central Java, 1948) established the Persada Study Club, a community of young poets in Yogyakarta’s Malioboro with Umbu Landu Paranggi and friends in 1968. He writes on literature and culture in Indonesian and Javanese, for a wide range of printed media, and has been active in moving the literary life of Indonesian and Javanese literature in Yogyakarta. Among his poems collections: Tiga Bayangan (1970), Dunia Semata Wayang (1996) and Matahari-Matahari Kecil (2004). His novels: Barong Kertapati (1976), Dorodasih (2002), and the newest, Gadis Teater (2007). Since 2004 he has been the Javanese language and literature Officer of the Yogyakarta Arts Council, and is also currently editor at a Yogyakarta publishing house.


Gus tf (Indonesia)

04-gus-tf-sakai-web.JPGGus tf (West Sumatra, 1965) is a collector and slave of poetry, a member of the poetry journal Puisi editorial. A number of his work have won competitions, such as the poetry writing competition of Direktorat Kesenian Ditjen Kebudayaan RI (1990) and received the Sih Award from the journal Puisi (2002). Besides into English, a number of his poetry has been translated into Arabic, German, and Portuguese. His published work include Sangkar Daging (1997) and Daging Akar (2005).


F. Rahardi (Indonesia)

04-f-rahardi-web.jpg(Ambarawa, 1950) did not complete his secondary education, 1967. He was on the editorial of agriculture magazine Trubus (1977-1997). His published poetry anthologies include Soempah WTS (1983), Catatan Harian Sang Koruptor (1985), Tuyul (1990), Silsilah Garong (1990), Pidato Akhir Tahun Seorang Germo (1997); as well as the short story collection Kentrung Itelile (1993); and lyrical prose Migrasi Para Kampret (1993).


Dorothea Rosa Herliany (Indonesia)

04-dorothea-rosa-herliany-web.JPG(Magelang, 1963) is the founder of Akar Institution, a non-profit organization in Magelang, and the publisher Indonesia Tera in Yogyakarta. She has received a number of awards, from the Minister for the Environment (1994), Jakarta Arts Council (2000), Language Centre (2003), and Khatulistiwa Literary Award (2006) to name a few. Among her published works are bi-lingual English and Indonesian anthologies Kill the Radio (2007 [2001]), Life Sentences (2004), and Santa Rosa (2006 [2005]).


Cyril Wong (Singapore)

04-cyril-wong.jpg(Singapore, 1977) is a countertenor and poet, the author of five published collections of poetry, co-author of a novel in verse Excess Baggage and Claim (2007), and winner of the National Arts Council of Singapore Young Artist Award for Literature (2005) and the Singapore Literature Prize (2006). His poems have been adapted to dance, drama, film and music. These collaborations have been presented in various countries, including the 27th Bali Arts Festival 2005 and the Magdalena International Festival of Women in Contemporary Theatre (USA, 2005). His poems have appeared in journals around the world; Atlanta Review, Fulcrum 3, Poetry International, Dimsum, and Poetry New Zealand, to name a few.


Chris Keulemans (Netherlands)

04-chris-keulemans-replace.jpgChris Keulemans (1960) made his debut in 1992 with the novella Overal om me heen is ruimte (All around me there is space), which was followed by Een korte wandeling in de heuvels (A short walk in the hills). He also wrote Van de zomer naar de werkelijkheid (From summer to reality). In these three books he reflects upon various personal subjects such as: football, running a bookstore and Eastern Europe. His latest work, a multi-media project entitled De Amerikaan die ik nooit geweest ben (The American I have never been) (2004), consists of a novel, photo documentation on dvd, a radio documentary and a website. From 1990 to 1998 Keulemans worked at the political cultural centre De Balie, the last three years as director. He regularly publishes in the newspapers De Volkskrant, Vrij Nederland and the literary magazine De Gids.


Ayu Utami (Indonesia)

Raised in Jakarta and completing her studies at the Faculty of Letters of Universitas Indonesia, she has been a reporter for magazines Humor, Matra, Forum Keadilan, and D&R. She become known as a novelist since her debut novel Saman won the 1998 Jakarta Arts Council novel writing competition, to the acclaim of critics for giving new colour to Indonesian literature. For Saman she was given the Prince Claus Award 2000 from the Prince Claus Fund, an organization based in the Hague with a mission to support and enhance cultural activities and development. In 2002, she launched her second novel Larung.


Agus Noor (Indonesia)

04-agus-noor-web.jpg(Tegal, 1968) has published a number of short-story compilations:  Memorabilia (1999), Bapak Presiden yang Terhormat (2000), Selingkuh itu Indah (2001), and Rendezvous – Kisah Cinta yang Tak Setia (2004). In 1992, his short story “Musuh” received the literature prize for the Yogyakarta Arts Festival. Three of his works, “Keluarga Bahagia”, “Dzikir Sebutir Peluru”, “Tak Ada Mawar di Jalan Raya” were selected by the Jakarta Arts Council selected to for Anugerah Cerpen Indonesia in 1999. The prose “Pemburu” was selected was one of the best for 1990-2000 by literary journal Horison. In 1998 he participated in the Writing Program of Majelis Sastra Asia Tenggara (Mastera, the South East Asia Literature Council)

Abdul Hadi W.M. (Indonesia)

04-abdul-hadi-wm-web.JPG(Madura, 1946) studied literary, culture, and philosophy at Gajah Mada University and participated in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 1973-74. Among his published collections of poetry are Laut Belum Pasang (1971), Potret Panjang Pengunjung Pantai Sanur (1975), Meditasi (1975), Tergantung Pada Angin (1982), Anak Laut Anak Angin (1982), Pembawa Matahari (2000), Madura, Luang Prabhang: Seratus Puisi (2006), and Dari Hitu ke Barus (2007). He was awarded an Arts Award by Indonesia (1979), the SEA Write Award by Thailand (1985), and Hadiah Mastera from the South East Asia Literary Council in Kuala Lumpur (2003). Despite writing poetry, he also translate and writes books about sufism and literary and islamic culture.


Zeffry Alkatiri

Studied Russian literature and American studies in Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta. He is now a lecturer in the Russian Department of Faculty of Letter Universitas Indonesia. His books are: Manusia, Mitos dan Mitologi (1998), collections of poetry Pintu, Etalase, Batavia Centrum (1998), Konflik Nilai dalam Sejarah Perkembangan Sastra Rusia. His collection of poems which won the year 2000 best poetry from Jakarta Art Council was published under title, Dari Batavia Sampai Jakarta 1619-1999 (From Batavia into Jakarta 1619-1999).


Ulfatin Ch.

Born in1967 in Pati, Central Java. Graduated from IAIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta. Whilst studying she participated in Studi Apresiasi Sastra-Literature Stury and Appreciation (SAS) dan Teater Eska, Yogyakarta. Her collections of poetry included: Konser Sunyi (1995) dan Selembar Daun Jati (1996).


Teobaldo Fortunato

Born in 1958, he is an archeologist and a lecturer of History of Visual Art. He studied archeology in Italy and Germany. Recently, he cooperates with local organization for conservation project in Salerno. He is active as a coordinator for several seminars on literature in Italy and other countries, and a writer for Lo Stallo delle Cose, a journal for art and literature. He has published a number of collected poems.


Taufik Ikram Jamil

Born in Telukbetung, Riau, 19 September 1963. In 1987 he graduated from the University of Riau and the following year became a journalist for Kompas. Tersebab Haku Melayu (1995) is his first collection of poetry.


Surianto

Born in the village of Lasmborek, Suriname in 1937. He has worked in the Interior Ministry and the Academic Hospital in Surinam. Music plays a big role in his life; he can play a number of instrument, teaches music, and for years has led a dance orchestra. His father was born in Pekalongan, Centra Java and was a member of one of the last groups of immigrants from Java to Surinam; whilst his mother’s parent had already immigrated to Surinam. Surianto has published a number of essays in the Indonesian magazine, Mekar Sari. His poetry does not only use Suriname-Javanese but is a ‘mixture of Surinam and Javanese and the Javanese which used in Central and East Java. In 1986, a collection of his poetry, Aruming Melathi/De Geur van Melathi was published – the first collection of bilingual poetry in Surinam. In 1990; his second collection, Tetesing bun adi/ Ededele dauwdruppels was published.


Sindu Putra

A poet and vet, Sindu was born in Sanur, Bali, on 31 July 1968. He began studying poetry writing at the age of 14. His poetry has been published in media many medias and anthologies.


Nenden Lilis Aisyah

Born in Malangbong, Garut, East Java, 26 December 1971. Graduated from pedagogic academy in Bandung, IKIP, majoring Indonesian literature and continuing his study in postgraduate program in the same academy. Her solo poetry book is Negeri Sihir (1999).


Mustafa Stitou

Born in Tetouan, Marocco, 1974, and grew up in Lelystad. Lives and works in Amsterdam where he also studies philosophy. He writes criticsm of poetry in the weekly magazine Vrij Nederland. In 1994 his first collection of poetry Mijn Vormen (my shape) was published, followed by Mijn Gedichten (my poetry) in 1998, both of which have been acclaimed. Stitou writes humorous poetry in his own way, and on stage gives high energy readings. He has succeeded in making a name for himself as a performer at a number of literature festivals, for example Poetry International in Rotterdam, 1994.


Loit Sols

Born in Retreat, South Africa in 1957 and grew up in the province of Tanjung. Worked as graphic designer for a long time, however is now well known in Kappstad as a singer and a street poet. His poetry is written in Goema Language (a regional street language in Kaapstad), and when reading it he always plays guitar as an accompaniment. In 1998 a collection of his poetry My Straat en anne praat-poems was published. Sols often appears at literature festivals for example: Stellenbos Woordfees in March 2001.


Joko Pinurbo

Born in a village in Sukabumi, East Java, 11 May 1962. After completing studies in Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta, in 1987, he worked as a lecturer in the same college while working also for cultural magazine Basis. Since 1999 have been an editor for the manuscript bureau of the publishing house Gramedia. His first book of poetry is Celana (1999). His manuscript of poetry anthology, Di bawah Kibaran Sarung (2002) won one of the prizes for best 1998-2000 poetry from the Jakarta Art Council. In 1997, his essay won one of the best essays from the magazine for literature Horison.


Ide Hintze

Born in Vienna in 1956. There he began studying theatre and communication-science which led to his extensive explorations into sound poetry, choral, visual and performance poetries. In 1991 he founded and currently served as director of the vienna poetry school. He has taught in Hanoi, Medellin, Boulder, Rome, Frankfurt, and Vienna. He collaborated with Allen Ginsberg, Nick Cave and Henri Chopin and has given reading and performance tours across Europe, Latin America, and Vietnam. He is author and editor of several books, cds, videos and internet-sites, among them the long poem “the golden flood” (1987), which has been translated into several languages, the cd “30 Rufe” (1993), the video “30 Nanzen” and his www-projects “ippoi” and “icons’ (http://www.sfd.at)


Gibi (Gilbert) Bacilio

(Curacao, 1950) is a poet and a poetry reader. He studied philosophy and theology in Colombia and in Holland. He is active in street theatre, especially with Grupo Teatro Foro of which he was artistic director in the 1970s and 1980s. He has produced and presented cultural programs for television and has studied the reading/reciting of oral literature and rithmical poetry writing (a kind of pantun – a traditional kind of poetry). Bacilio writes about the colonial past, the Indian people, slavery and the dominant attitudes in Holland. However there are also many erotic and intimate nuances in his works. His poetry has been published in a number of books and magazines – and in 2000 a collection of his poetry, Kueru Marka was published.


Eddin Khoo

Malaysian of mixed Chinese-Indian descent. He completed his postgraduate studies in Southeast Asian Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, UK. A poet and Malay shadow-puppet master. He currently earns a living as a freelance writer.


Dorothea Rosa Herliany

Born in Magelang in Central Java, 20 October 1963. She writes poetry, short stories, essays, notes on performances and art criticsm. She has published a number of collections of poetry including: Nyanyian Gaduh (1987), Matahari yang Mengalir (1990), Kepompong Sunyi (1993), Nikah Ilalang (1995), Blencong (1995), Karikatur dan Sepotong Cinta (1996), Mimpi Gugur Daun Zaitun (1999), Perempuan yang Menunggu (2000), Kill The Radio: Sebuah Radio Kumatikan (2000) and Santa Rosa (2005). She has participated many festivals and international meeting of writers such as the meeting of ASEAN literati in the Philippines (1990), the Festival of Indonesian-Dutch poetry in The Haag, and was a writer in residence in Australia. After graduating from the Faculty of Indonesian Language and Literature Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta, she worked for several years as a journalist and freelance writer. In 1998 founded Indonesiatera publishing house in Magelang.


D. Zawawi Imron

Has been known as a poet since the ‘Temu Penyair 10 Kota’ (Meeting of Poets from 10 Cities) at Taman Ismail Marzuki, 1982. In that year, his first collection of poetry, Bulan Tertusuk Lalang, was also published. This collection inspired Garin Nugroho’s film, a prominent Indonesian director. The film was Bulan Tertusuk Ilalang. In 1987, a collection of his poetry, Nenek Moyangku Airmata was awarded a prize by Yayasan Buku Utama. In 1990, this book, together with Celurit Emas choosen as “best books” by the Centre for the Language Development. In 1994, his collection of poetry Berlayar di Pamor Badik was published. Zawawi lives in Batang-Batang in Madura Island.


CP Surendran

Poet, critic, columnist and Deputy Editor of the Bombay Times. He has published two collections of poetry, Gemini II (1994) and Posthumous Poems (1999). His poems also been published in several journals and anthologies in India and abroad.


Arif B. Prasetyo

Born in Madiun, 30 September 1971. he writes poetry, essays, translations and visual art reviews. His poetry has been included in a number of books and journals in Indonesia as well as in Malaysia. He has translated a number of foreign poet’s work into Indonesian including Octavio Paz, Derek Walcott, Johanes Bobrowski, Michael Ondaatje. His translation of the novel Wife by Bharati Mukherjee was published as a serial in Republika daily paper. His solo collection of poetry, Mahasukka was published in 2000.


Acep Zamzam Noor

Born in Tasikmalaya, 28 February 1960. He grew up within a traditional religious education  Pondok Pesantren Cipasung, Tasikmalaya. From 1980-1987 completed his study in Painting School of The Faculty of Fine Art and Design. He received a scholarship from the Italian Government to study at Universita’ Italiana per Stanieri, Perugia, Italy (1991-1993). His poetry collections include: Di Luar Kata (1996), Di Atas Umbria (1999), Dongeng dari Negeri Sembako (2001), Jalan Menuju Rumahmu (2004), and a Sundanese poetry collection, Dayeuh Matapoe (1993) which nominee Rancage Award, 1994. In 2000 and 2005 Acep received Literary Writing Award from Pusat Bahasa, Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (Centre for the Language Development, National Education Development) . In 2005 he also received The SEA Write Awards 2005 from Thailand. In 2006 received Anugerah Kebudayaan from East Java Governor. Beside writes poetry, he also painting and doing some exhibition in Indonesia and abroad.

Umbu Landu Paranggi

Born in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, 10 August 1943. With Ragil Suwarna Pragolapati, Teguh Ranusastra Asmara and Iman Budhi Santhosa, established the Persada Study Club, 5 March 1969, in Yogyakarta, which became the cradle of young writers in Yogya in the 70s and 80s. Among his works are Melodia, Maramba Ruba, and Sarang.  His anthology of poetry is published under the title Sabana. He is currently on the editorial of Bali Post.


Triyanto Triwikromo

is a short story writer, author of the anthology Sayap Anjing (Dog Wings, Published by Kompas, 2003), Children Sharpening the Knives (Masscom Media, 2003), and Rezim Seks dan Ragaula (Aini, 2002). His short story, Mata Sunyi Perempuan Takroni was selected as one of the best of 2002 by Kompas. He currently works as a reporter and daily literary editor for the Suara Merdeka, Semarang.


Timur Sinar Suprabana

Based in Semarang, he is well-known as a poet and for his particular art of performance poetry.


Sapardi Djoko Damono

Born in Solo, Central Java, 20 March 1940. Teaches at the Literature Faculty of Indonesia Universit since 1975; now holding professorship. Once active as editor of cultural and literary journal Kalam, Basis, Horison, Tenggara (Malaysia). Amongh is works are DukaMu Abadi (1969), Mata Pisau (1974), Perahu Kertas (1983; achieved the Jakarta Arts Council Literature Award), Sihir Hujan (1984), Hujan Bulan Juni (1994), Arloji (1998), Ayat-Ayat Api (2000). He also translates worl literature such as Enest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea (1973), Selection of Poetry by George Seferis (1975), Classical Chinese Poetry (1976), Classical Farsi Lyrics (1977), A Restless Africa (1988).


Raudal Tanjung Banua

Studied theatre at the Yogyakarta Arts School (ISI). Previously contributing to daily newspapers Semangat and Haluan. A member of Sanggar Minum Kopi, Denpasar and has studied poetry under the tutelage of Umbu Landu Parangi. In 2004 he received the accolade for best poetry Sih Award from Jurnal Puisi and one of his short stories won the Horison Literature Prize. Now he manages Komunitas Rumah Lebah in Yogyakarta and AKAR Indonesia that publish the Indonesia short story journal.


Putu Wijaya

Born in Tabanan, Bali, 11 April 1944. Completed his studies at the Law faculty of Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta. This member of Bengkel Teater (1960) and Teater Ketjil (1970) established and headed Teater Mandiri in Jakarta. Putu once lived in a commune in Ittoen, Japan (1973). Participated in a few festivals and international literary and theater programs such as the Iowa International Writing Program (1974-1975) and World Theater Festival in Nancy, France (1975). Has published various novels, collections of short stories and theatere scripts.


Oka Rusmini

Born in Jakarta, 11 July 1967. Among her published work are Tarian Bumi (200) and Sagra (2001). To follow are Kenanga (novel) and Patiwangi (collection of poetry). In the beginning of 2003 she read her work at the Winternachten Poetry Festival in Holland. Currently resides in Bali.


Zen Hae

or Nur Zain Hae was born in Kembangan, West Jakarta, 12 April 1970. He graduated from IKIP Jakarta in the field of Indonesian Language and Literature in 1994. He writes poetry, short stories and literary reviews. A number of his poetry have been winning or nominated entries to poetry writing competitions in a number of cities in Indonesia. His first short story collection, Rumah Kawin was published in 2004.


Nukila Amal

Born in Ternate, Indonesia, in 1971, Nukila Amal has had her 2005 short story collection, Laluba, named Best Literary Work of the Year by Tempo magazine, and her novel Cala Ibi (2003) shortlisted for the Khatulistiwa Literary Award. Both works have marked the latest phenomenon in Indonesian literature by their détournement from the tradition of story telling and conventional narrative forms. At present, she serves on the Literature Committee of the Jakarta Arts Council.


Linda Christanty

Born on the island of Bangka in 1970, Linda Christanty is a writer and journalist. Her first short story received an award from Kompas in 1989. Her anthology of short stories, Maria Pinto’s Flying Horse won the Khatulistiwa Literary Award in 2004. Besides writing fiction, she also writes features for various media. She once worked as editor at Pantau, a magazine observing the media and journalism in Indonesia, and also has written scripts for radio dramas. She now lives in Banda Aceh and heads the Pantau Foundation news office.


K. Sello Duiker

Born in Soweto at the height of apartheid in 1974, K. Sello Duiker commited suicide in Johannesburg, January 2005. He received the 2001 Statebonds prize for the best African debut for his first book Thirteen Cents (2000), a powerful short novel about the seamy side of Capetown. Despair, uncertainty and survival instincts are the themes explored in a setting of prostitutes, gangsters and hunger reprieved by moments of hope and happiness. His second novel The Quiet Violence of Dreams (2003) is about a student that experiences an identity crisis. In Duiker’s work the individual insanity can never be separated from the improbable country in which his stories take place.


Grant Caldwell

teaches creative writing of poetry and fiction, theatre, art, photography and cinema in Australia and overseas. Eastern philosophy, Australian and international politics, the environment and education are his areas of interest. His collections of poetry include Dreaming of Robert de Niro (2003) and You Know What I Mean (1996), nominated for The Age Book of the Year Award. His novel Malabata (1991), was nominated for the Australian Human Rights Award.


Frans Nadjira

was born in Ujungpandang, 3 September 1942. In 1978 he participated in the International Writin Program at Iowa University, USA. Among his published work are Jendela (Window, 1980), Spring of Fire, Spring of Tears (1988), Bercakap-cakap di Bawah Guguran Daun-daun (Conversaions under Falling Leave, 2004).


Eva Christina Zeller

Born 2 July 1960 in Ulm, Eva Christina Zeller is a lyricist, writer and journalist. She studied philosophy, germanistics, the art of theatre and rhetorics in Berlin and Tubingen, and in 1988 lectured at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. She now lives in Tubingen, where she works as a free-lance writer and as a broadcast journalist.


Denise Jannah

Born in Suriname, 1956, Jannah is seen as one of the best jazz singers in the world. After grammar school she started a study in law, which she gave up in favour of a musical career. In 1991, by the time she graduated, her first album Take It From The Top was a fact and she had played one of the leading roles in the musical A Night at the Cotton Club. 1997 was a good year for Jannah, with a leading role in Joe the Musical, appearances for the European Union TOP and later that year for all the heads of state of Europe and the former president Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary. Denise Jannah taught at the Rotterdam Conservatorium and gives workshops and masterclasses in the Netherlands, Suriname and the U.S.A. In 2001, invited by Winternachten, Jannah started to sing poems, set to music composed by herself. This resulted in invitations for various literary festivals, amongst others Winternachten at the Antilles and in Indonesia. Her CD Gedicht-Gezongen (Poem-Sung) was launched during the Winternachten festival of January 2004 in the Hague.


Chitra Gajadin

Born in Surinam 1954. Gajadin moved to The Netherlands in 1972. Her poetry describes the changing of life’s balance for Hindus leaving Surinam. Despite being part of the Sarnami movement (promoting the Surinamese/Hindustani Language), her first three poetry collections were written in Dutch: Van erf tot skai (collected in From grounds to imitation leather , 1977). The collection Kab ke yaad/Van wanneer een herinnering (From when a memory, 1984) anthologises the Sarnami poetry, along with translations in Dutch. In her stories, collected in Bari dopahar, (The Hottest Hour of the Day, 1989), she remembers and describes the country she has left. Her latest novel is Schoorvoetige tijden (2000, Hesitant Times).


Changa Hickinson

02-changa-hickinson.jpgBorn in Aruba 1957, is one of St. Martin’s better-known and more serious poets. He has lived in Trinidad and the Netherlands and in the 1980s made St. Martin his home, where his first book, Illegal Truth was published in 1991. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, he became well known for his belief in Rastafari, for the recital of his thundering poetry at various cultural manifestations, as a budding actor, and as an organizer for the bus drivers association in the South of the island. Changa’s work was recently published in an anthology of St. Martin’s writings.


Ari Pahala Hutabarat

Holds a degree in Indonesian Language and Literature from Lampung University. He is the artistic director of Berkat Yakin Community (KoBER) and has performed in, and directed over 20 performances. He is actively involved in local and national literary avtivities. He is director of the Lampung Board of Art Literary Committee. Ari’s poem have been published in several poetry anthologies.


Ahmad Tohari

Ahmad Tohari was born in the village of Tinggarjaya in Jatilawang, Banyumas on 13 June 1948. He completed his secondary education in Purwokerto and dabbled at tertiary level without ever mastering the disciplines of economics, socio-politics and medicine. Ahmad Tohari stays true to the rural life experiences that colour all his work. Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, Lintang Kemukus Dini Hari, and Jantera Bianglala are a trilogy set in remote Dukuh Paruk, depicting the dynamic ronggeng folk dance. The works of Ahmad Tohari have been published in Japanese, Chinese, Dutch and German.


Adriaan van Dis

born in 1946, made his debut with the novel Nathan Sid, the story of a boy that grew up between two cultures: the paradise of colonial Indonesia and the drabness of the Netherlands after the Second World War. His fascination for other cultures permeates his entire oeuvre, from his travelogues Het beloofde land (The promised land), on the farmers in South Africa, and In Afrika, on the war in Mozambique, right up to Indische duinen, which is Van Dis’s greatest success. His last book appeared in 1999: Dubbelliefde (Dual love), a splendid and strongly personal account of a young man’s maturing and his realisation of his sexual, political and spiritual nature. Dubbelliefde also became an enormous best-seller in the Netherlands.


A. Mustofa Bisri

Born in Rembang 10 August 1944. Learn in many traditional Islamic education: Pesantren Lirboyo, Kediri, Krapyak and Yogyakarta. Also studied in Al Azhar, whilst he likes to join many poetry reading forum included Mirbid Festival X in Iraq. His poetry books are: Ohoi, Kumpulan Puisi Balsem; Tadarus; Pahlawan dan Tikus; Rubaiyat Angin dan Rumput; and Wekwekwek.

A.S. Laksana

was born in Semarang, 25 Desember 1968. He studied in the Indonesian Language Program at IKIP, Semarang and Communication Program at Faculty of Politic and Social Sciences, Gadjah Mada University. He is one of the founders of Gorong Gorong Budaya, and the tabloid DeTIK, which had banned on 1994. His collected columns from DeTIK, were published under the title Podium DeTIK (1995). His is a founder of the Akubaca Foundation and the Jakarta School – Creative Learning Center.
